The place to be in the summer of 2011 is Newfoundland and Labrador. Indulge your musical, creative and scholarly spirit and join us for this exciting event!

Festival 500, in cooperation with Memorial University of Newfoundland, invites proposals for presentations at The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium VIII. This highly acclaimed symposium is an integral academic component of Festival 500. Its purpose is to gather international expertise and provide a forum for interdisciplinary discourse and performance, the dissemination of research, and the generation of further knowledge relating to the phenomenon of singing. The Symposium invites submissions relating to all aspects of singing and the voice.

1. PROPOSAL INFORMATION

Proposal submissions should consist of a 250-300 word abstract addressing the phenomenon of singing in focus areas such as artistic, physiological, cultural, sociological, historical, pedagogical, psychological, compositional... and beyond!  Submissions relating to the Symposium's sub-theme The Power of Song are encouraged.

A diversity of presentation formats is welcome. These could include research paper presentation, lecture demonstration, lecture-recital, panel and/or roundtable discussions and poster presentations. Standard presentations are generally 20-minutes in length, followed by a 10-minute discussion period. Selected papers will be published in the Symposium Proceedings

2. SUBMISSION INFORMATION

Proposal submissions are due October 15, 2010. All submissions will be reviewed anonymously by an international selections panel; presenters will be notified of acceptance by November 15, 2010.

3. 2011 INVITED KEYNOTE PRESENTERS
John August Pamintuan (Philippines)

John August Pamintuan, an award winning composer (Tours, France 2009 and Tokyo, Japan 2008), has also been recognized by the American Federation of Musicians as an artist of sustained international acclaim. With over 200 commissioned works performed widely in international competitions, his music depicts indigenous music practices and traditions through rich sonorities, rhythmic drive, effusion of character and fervency of expression.

Mark Anthony Carpio (Philippines)

Mark Anthony Carpio, conductor, vocal coach/accompanist, countertenor soloist and lecturer at the College of Music, University of the Philippines, is currently the conductor of the critically-acclaimed University of the Philippines Madrigal Singers (Madz). In 2009, the Madz were designated UNESCO Artist for Peace in recognition of their contribution to extend the message of peace and tolerance and to promote dialogue and understanding among people. www.philippinemadrigalsingers.com

Scott McCoy (USA)

Scott McCoy, a professor of voice and pedagogy, is Director of the Presser Music Voice Laboratory at Westminster Choir College. His research in the areas of voice physiology and acoustical analysis has led to the publication of Your Voice: An Inside View (2004), a multimedia voice science and pedagogy text used around the world.  In addition to maintaining an active singing career, Scott is President of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). www.voiceinsideview.com

Bob Chilcott (UK)

Bob Chilcott has enjoyed a three-fold musical career as a singer, conductor and composer. A former member of The King's Singers, Bob is currently Principal Guest Conductor with the BBC Singers and has been an invited guest conductor in 23 countries on six continents. A prolific composer, Bob has over 100 pieces published by Oxford University Press. He has served also as editor for series such as World Carols for Choirs and Spirituals for Choirs (Oxford). www.bobchilcott.com

Kate Munger (USA)

Kate Munger, singer/songwriter, has led community singing for over three decades. In 2000, she founded the first Threshold Choir in the San Francisco Bay area for women who are called to sing at the bedsides of people who are dying, in coma, children in hospital, and with women who are incarcerated. Today there are Threshold Choirs in over 100 communities in the US, Canada, Spain, Mexico, the UK, and Australia. www.thresholdchoir.org

Lady Cove Women's Choir (Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada)
Kellie Walsh, Conductor

Lady Cove Women's Choir, one of Canada's leading choral ensembles, will present a multimedia lecture-performance. Evolving from research and the exploration of indigenous and contemporary musical, poetic, visual and dance traditions, this series of commissioned pieces illustrates the creation of new choral contexts and performance practices. Canadian composers such as Imant Raminsh, James Rolfe, Stephen Hatfield, and Christos Hatzis are featured in this presentation.www.ladycove.ca

SPECIAL PANEL PRESENTATION: Growing Choral Communities

In 2011, Festival 500 brings together international choral leaders to explore issues, challenges, and possibilities related to building choirs and choral organizations. Panellists will share how national and international organizations are providing resources, support and professional development for conductors, choirs, and managers.

4. EARN GRADUATE CREDIT - FEESTIVAL 500 CHORAL INSTITUTE

Festival 500 and Memorial University of Newfoundland offer opportunities for graduate study through the Festival 500 Choral Institute. Memorial's Faculty of Education and School of Music collaborate to offer a complement of three graduate courses in the areas of choral conducting, vocal/choral pedagogy, and singing traditions and practices.  Through guided and mentored participation in both The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium VIII and the choral festival, graduate students can expand their knowledge of and experience with all aspects of singing... and earn graduate credit at the same time!  Capacity is limited so be sure to enquire about this opportunity and register early.  Additional information and application procedures are available at http://www.festival500.com.

5. FESTIVAL 500 and INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL FOR TRADITIONAL MUSIC
